Reviews

Well, actually these are more recommendations and comments about the releases that we like and play in our show. I always hated long reviews anyway. Now read and listen to some music!

2006 - 2005 - 2004

December

Matzo and Pauli
Matzo and Pauli
[Viewlexx; 2004]

It`s nothing new that previous trash aesthetic became a cult. In a case of italo disco we can say cult-light. Crunchy percussions, synthetic disco bass patterns and soft beats gave us this vision: Party of ironic, well educated, alpe-adria technocracy somewhere in Adriatic islands. Gently decadent and healing atmosphere at the same time. (E.Z.)

Illektric
Paranoia
[Disco B; 2004]

What we have here is a product of a very successful overseas collaboration between Spanish producer Serafin Gallego a.k.a Alek Stark and American singer Aqeel. This perfect mixture of hip-hop, rap ( Aqeel is background-singer of Dr.Dre and Samy Deluxe) and electro sounds will definitely make you get up out of your chair and move. So Paranoia is a great debut ep, and to be honest I can`t wait to hear the full length... Or at least another ep... (A.I.)

Unit Black Flight
Escape from Indianapolis
[Bunker; 2004]

Old fashion modern music, TV sound, vintage crime stories, all in one. Wonderful retrodoxa of Unit Black Flight comes with sophisticated delicacy of raw electronic basses and simple beats teleported as idea from unforgettable ancient mystic electronic classics. Highly recommended! (E.Z.)

Adolf Eizenstat
Sigi Feigel gehört zuerst gehaut und dann ausgewiesen
[20k125; 2004] - Free Download

I have never heard of this guy before and I don`t know anything about him now. Description of his release, on the labels website, says: "don't ask who's 'adolf eizenstat' - we won't tell you, we will even deny his existence". This sucks... Or maybe not! Are the sleazy low bitrate dance tracks stuff that you want to hear at the end of 2004? I don`t know about you but if you ask me the answer is YES! (A.I.)

Marko Fürstenberg
Useless Cutz
[Stadtgruen; 2004] - Free Download

If you are interested in new forms and glitchy dancefloor tunes better find some time to check out latest efforts by Marko Fürstenberg. He is not a new name on the netlabel scene and he has been releasing tracks under the names Dolby and Surphase on the Berlin based netlabel Thinner. Unlike his earlier works on the mentioned label, that could be described as crisp & clean dubtech, his latest tunes are less spacey and far more rougher but in the right manner. (A.I.)

Legowelt
Under the Panda Moon
[Creme Organization; 2004]

We proudly recommend to you this fabulous release by Danny Wolfers. Wolfers came with Under the Panda Moon ep as a fanatic vintage equipment enthusiast, part trash horror, part classic electronic composer, full of gentle, conspiratory mood and sceptical predictions. This is actually improved Squadra Blanco, side of Danny's artistic work, which could be used as unforgettable spice for many documentaries, educational programs and other retro TV needs. (E.Z.)

Lo-Bat
Game Boy
[8bitpeoples/Retinascan; 2004] - Free Download

This great new Lo-bat. release comes to us from the awesome NYC based 8bitpeoples label. Earlier this release was published on the Retinascan label as limited CDR. What can I say about this Belgium based game boy wizard except that his releases contain everything that I love about this kind of music! Check out these five gameboy rockers, I am sure that you will not regret. (A.I.)

Reverbaphon
Our Heart Beats With Joy
[The Curved World Outside]
[Benbecula; 2004]

After his debut ep in 2002 on the Scotland`s Benbecula label Paul Smith aka Reverbaphon brings us this beautiful lp on the same imprint. But he is not a newcomer to the scene, he has been making music and playing in improv bands for 12 years! And you can actually feel that on this release. It is a beautiful mixture of organic and electronic sounds, somewhere between refreshing folk and experimental, electro-acoustic works... Truly eclectic music! (A.I.)

Various Artists
Featherfoil
[Camomille; 2004] - Free Download

Another great release by netlabel Camomille, featuring names like Benefit of the Boomerang, Transient, Vizion, Kaminari Synthesis, is here. This Various Artists release, almost 2 hours long, presents some of the most innovative indietronic works i have heard in the last time. Sounds on this compilation range from electro and idm, to smooth downtempo and ambient works. And if you are not allready familiar with Camomille artists this virtual 2-lp will serve as a great introduction. (A.I.)

Paul Keeley
Rocky Mountain Funk
[Epsilonlab; 2004] - Free Download

Paul Keeley appeared on the Thinner`s split release with Dennis DeSantis earlier this year. I did not like his tunes, they were kind of too mild for my taste... But that is not the case with Rocky Mountain Funk. I can tell you that this ep is done with a lot of style! Some carefully chosen French house elements are cutting thru the mix together with subtly compressed beats, basslines, guitar licks... I really enjoy this one and I am looking forward to hear next release by Paul. (A.I.)

Orgue Electronique
Texas Brooklyn & Heaven
[Creme Organisation; 2004]

Brian Chinetti always has something to refresh us, his retro fetish aesthetic and good production skills. This five tracker, Texas, Brooklyn & Heaven ep, is fully soaked in to the early club house mood, analogue beats, and flavoured by touching italo synths. This release is suitable for easy club jamming and of course for educational purposes! (E.Z.)

Jeff Bennett
Lowdown EP
[Thinner; 2004] - Free Download

One of the Malmö`s finest, he does not need special introduction, strikes again! It seems that Jeff is turning to a digital distribution of his music lately. After his release on Epsilonlab, earlier this year, here he comes with the new ep on Thinner; And he is even thinking about turning his label Kung Fu Dub in to a digital one... About the release. Very calm one it is, but with some catchy dancefloor elements. I especially like "Messages", original version and Dennis DeSantis remix. What can I say? Jeff is definitely on the right track! (A.I.)

TecRoc
The Brainiac
[Kommando 6; 2002/2004]

This beautiful dark electro release was published two years ago by Augsburg (Germany) based label, Kommando 6, and than it's repressed in 2004. Not without a reason. TecRoc's brutal, dark, sensibility featuring sophisticated trash horror themes and electro-core beats, brings him on top of the most interesting contemporary electro vibes producers. (E.Z.)

Ricardo vs. Jay
Prefer Summer [+Remixes]
[Textone; 2004] - Free Download

Textone is one year old! Happy birthday! This one was originally released on Contexterrior and then re-released on the Textone with some additional remixes. I like the raw sound of this ep, very smart production. It definitely moves this kind of sound forward! Glitchy sounds mixed with minimal beats and beautiful melodies, yes, Ricardo & Jay are managing to stay smooth and to provide some weird raw energy at the same time... And I have heard that Jay is appearing on the new Mille Plateaux`s release, Clicks & Cuts 4... (A.I.)

Frank Biedermann
Wookies Woods
[Stadtgruen; 2004] - Free Download

I have not heard deep dubtech release that I really dig since Fürstenberg`s "Gesamtlaufzeit" lp published on Thinner last year. Now Frank Biedermann, together with Stadtgruen label, brings to us this great, very deep and warm 4 tracker. I love everything on it! Tight beats, warm basslines, smooth licks and stabs... This is dubtech in one of it`s finest forms. Highly recommended! (A.I.)
