Interview: Marko Fürstenberg

The straight stress and the hectic rush of the last half year, the changes on any level induced me to try out something completely different...

This ep is the product of this insight... 4 years ago there was only a hand full of netlabels... These days I often listen to the rhythm & sound and deepchord stuff...

Oscilator: Your new ep, Useless Cutz, is out now. I have heard it and it seems to me that you are now exploring harder, glitchy, side of dubtech. What can you tell me about this?

Fuerstenberg
: Yes, the Useless Cutz is harder and rougher than my other releases. The reason is the change in every part of my life, the changing times and the problems of our civilization. It`s more a test than a change of my style. The beats and sounds are not dubby, they are more more glitchy and ruff. Here is the very good text from the Stadtgruen label website: "The straight stress and the hectic rush of the last half year, the changes on any level induced me to try out something completely different... Music without depth and space... Wild sound chips... Mixed with dull/musty beats... Thus I see also the social development of the future... Nothing with depth, less space... Hardly anyone has still real plans for the future... Above all the youth is very disoriented and disillusioned... This ep is the product of this insight. Rough, unvarnished, dry, sometimes crudely, sometimes without any style or plan." But this does not mean, that I will change my style to this genre... It was a test, an experiment.

Oscilator: You have been changing your name often but lately you are working only under your real name. Will that change?

Fuerstenberg: Friends of mine call me "dolby" since the early 90`s. At the beginning of my musical work I have been releasing under this name. But for the first 12" release (Thinner Allstars pt.1) I had to choose an other name because the name dolby is a trademark. I have published the following releases under the name Surphase, but most of my friends and other musicians were saying: "Use your own name". Thats it. I don`t think that I will change my name in the future.

Oscilator: Your latest ep is published on Stadtgruen and and the one before, Inaxa Stream, was published on Realaudio. Does this mean that you are not working with Thinner any more?

Fuerstenberg: The label owners from Stadtgruen and Realaudio are good friends of mine. The Thinner "incoming" section is full... Planned for months. I have a good mail contact with Sebastian from Thinner, and of course I am working on the tracks for Thinner. In the last half of the year I had a lot of things to do... Planning events, etc. During this period I have not produced a lot of tracks. But now in the darker and colder days I have time to do more stuff. Be sure, that I`m still a part of the Thinner collective.

Oscilator: What do you think about the expansion of the netlabels and will you continue to distribute your music this way?

Fuerstenberg: In the last years the netlabel scene became bigger and bigger. But 4 years ago there was only a hand full of netlabels. For more unknown artists, like me, the netlabels are a good platform to present your music, get in touch with other musicians, make contacts, meet people... not only in Germany. Netlables are a good promotion to get live gigs. But i see, in the last months, a lot of new netlabels, and there is a lot of good or less good releases, that is good for the listeners, but not good for the individual artist. Because of the multiplicity of the releases and the netlabels it`s heavy to differentiate good from less good music.

Oscilator: Please tell me something about your production methods? What do you use more software or hardware? What is your favorite piece of hardware/software?

Fuerstenberg: I use Propellerheads Reason for sequencing and modulating the sounds. The sounds that I make mostly with my Kurzweil k2000 sampler or Vst instruments.... Or simply by sampling.

Oscilator: What are you doing at the moment? Are you working on anything else beside music?

Fuerstenberg: At the moment I study Ecological Energy Engineering, and have a lot of projects, like event management and since some days I am cutting custom vinyls with a special machine.

Oscilator: Have you seen lately any concerts or live acts worth mentioning?

Fuerstenberg: I have heard a lot of live sets and my favorites are Martin Donath (Stadtgruen) and Digitalis (Realaudio). I have not seen any famous acts in the last year.

Oscilator: What are you listening to these days, are there any new artists that you especially like?

Fuerstenberg: These days I often listen to the rhythm & sound and deepchord stuff. I also like Matthew Dear, Jackmate and some of the latest Perlon releases. I also listen to the jazz and ambient, but i can`t tell you the names.
