Interview: MANASYt

Combine the sound of MINISTRY and DREXCIYA with present and maybe you'll get what's in my head these days

I grew up with metal and industrial... Kommando 6 is the first label that liked my stuff... I've been in USA for 6 years now... EP "Microwave Mind" will be out in a week...

Oscilator: Your profile says that you have started as a singer in a hardocore-metal band. These days fancy producers describe them selves as wunderkinds who have started producing electronic music at the age of 13, and they talk about influences like New order, Kraftwerk, and... so on. How did your music roots influenced music that you are createing today?

MANASYt: Well, I started making music 2 years ago, I was 26 at that time. I grew up with metal and industrial and you can definitely guess that listening to my stuff. After getting into a broad range of electronic music I fell in love with electro. So say, combine the sound of MINISTRY and DREXCIYA as examples of my roots and present respectively and maybe you'll get what's in my head these days.

Oscilator: What is MANASYt?

MANASYt: MANASY is a Bulgarian name, not popular at all. The "t" is from my last name, so its pronounced "manasi ti", accent on the second "a". We came up with stupid names like that while being in this band at that time, so it`s nothing satanic.

Oscilator: Can you tell us something about your connections with Kommando 6 and other similar, dark electronic militia labels?

MANASYt: Kommando 6 is the first label (from Germany) that liked my stuff. The owner and producer (and a great friend) Beta Evers released my first EP "Junk Mail" in 2003. Andrea Parker released my second EP "Brainwash Volunteer Program" last month on her label Touchin Bass (UK). I also released a couple of tracks on the Belgian label Roulette recordz owned by Poladroid and IKKo (awesome people I met on the net). The new EP "Microwave Mind" will be out on that label in a week! There's more sickness planned to be released later on this year as well.

Oscilator: What do you think about contemporary music inspired by italo disco funk and dark electro disco? I think there is a fluid between so called "Hague" scene and other electro punk freshness from Europe.

MANASYt: I don't like italo at all to tell you the truth and don't know a lot about old school electro... I love the old Legowelt and Orgue E. releases but kinda lost track of that stuff. I like Volfram from the Swedish elektro camp. I've only heard Adult doing elektro punk sounding stuff but hearing `em now doesn't make me very happy. Belgium has a brutal electro scene, it seems to be hapenning there!!!

Oscilator: Most of the home and small club producers, netlabel owners, are doing something else for living beside making music. Is your situation similar?

MANASYt: Yeah, quite similar. I just moved to Detroit where's rather hard to get a job... I finally got a shitty one yesterday paying 7$ an hour, people who live here know how much that is hehehe. I've been in USA for 6 years now, I wont get into details...

Oscilator: There is bunch of good dark electronics producers like TecRoc, Dystonic, also Frigobox, and of course italo and electro funk producers from Bunker and similar labels. How do you see future of that kind of interesting and intelligent sound?

MANASYt: Yes, there's a lot of unsigned artists out there that do some amazing stuff too! Well I cant say how drastic it would change with time. As far as me, I never know what my next track would sound like, I don't follow formulas, or use the same beat, sounds or tempo all the time. ELECTRO is not a cliché anymore or music for breakdancing. Maybe some would disagree. Im thinking with the stuff people produce today, hardcore electro artists can easily warm up for say someone like FANTOMAS!

Oscilator: You are from Bulgaria, maybe you can tell us about interesting electronic music from your homeland and about your recent contacts with some organisations from Balkans?

MANASYt: I recently found out about Esem, a Bulgarian IDM producer releasing on M3rck and Defocus records, check him out if you haven't heard! Also Bluba Lu who are about to release an album on LTJ Bukem's Good Looking records, acid jazz/downtempo stuff. I need to catch up on Bulgaria ,man, will be sending some records back home soon, maybe to radio stations and magazines. Other than that I don't have any contacts with labels or music organizations at this time, but hopefully soon!

Oscilator: Do you have plans to publish some of your tracks on the netlabels, and what do you think about that kind of music presentation?

MANASYt: I haven't had an offer yet, but I would do it as I have maybe 40 finished tracks laying around and I would love people especially in Eastern Europe to be familiar with stuff like that, because its not that easy to buy records there and be informed about what's going on in that particular music scene. It is a great way of presentation simply cuz its free and easily accessible!

Oscilator: Can you tell us something about your favourite labels, producers, and about equipment that you use?

MANASYt: My favourite labels are mostly the ones I release on, and the producers on em!!! Huge respect!!! ULTRADYNE I love,sick-fucked up electro. I still listen to stuff like SONIC YOUTH, TOM WAITS, SWANS, TUXEDOMOON or anything MIKE PATTON comes up with!!! Mick Harris' SCORN is pretty messed up stuff too, handle with caution hehehe. As far as equipment I don't have any real "gear". As funny as it may sound (I won't lie) I use Fruityloops 3.5, a buttload of VST`s, Edirol MIDI controller, and samples I tweak beyond recognition. That's all...
